Ad-aware
Essential in the war against spyware and adware. There is a free version available but the added features (like Ad-watch and auto updating) are more than worth the one time cost of $26.95.

Spybot Search & Destroy
Coupled with Ad-aware, Spybot offers excellent protection against malicious malwares. What one misses, the other is sure to catch. The best part is that it's absolutely free.

AVG Free Advisor
As good as, if not better than, Norton's or McAfee's. It's no where near as invasive nor or the resources hog that most of the mainstream software is...and it's free!
